|Bill Hermanson - Fourth Grade (Send e-mail)|
Have a great Spring Break! Enjoy some time off of the busy school schedule. When we return I expect my crew to focus on IAR/PARCC. My feelings on IAR/PARCC are this...it's just another test. I don't stress or care about it that much. If I stress about it...my students will...and that's unnecessary stress on a child. Yes, it's important and I want them to do well but I'm not one of those teachers that crams and focuses only on PARCC. Do your best, take your time, answer the question they're asking and show the State of Illinois how smart you are...that's it. It's like a game or competition...Student vs the State of Illinois. My bet is on the student---every day of the week.
PARCC testing has been renamed to IAR (gotta love the State of Illinois for changing things every few years). My specific classrooms schedule is as follows:
April 3rd...1:15-3:15...ELA 1
April 4th...1:15-3:15...ELA 2
April 9th...1:15-2:45...MATH 1
April 10th...1:15-2:45...MATH 2
April 11th...1:15-2:45...MATH 3
HEADPHONES ARE NEEDED FOR THESE TESTS. SOME STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE THEM. ASK THEM...THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE.
Quarter 3 Book Project is due by March 18th. Students will need to create a poster, diorama, letter to author, etc. They have a list of 30+ options for their project...just like Quarters 1 and 2.
Fourth Grade will have 2 animal paw print pencil sales on March 8th and March 15th. Money donated will go to the World Wildlife Federation to help endangered animals. The students will vote on what animal we'd like the money to specifically go to...Black Rhino? Bottlenose Dolphin? Red Panda? The money donated will be used to stop poachers, train zookeepers, promote safe living quarters for endangered animals, etc. In return the Wildlife Federation sends us a stuffed animal of the animal we chose with an official certificate. Pencils will be $0.50 each but any money is accepted for this great cause. The students are excited about helping in any capacity they can. This is connected to our Ivan novel we read and the research we completed on the Lowland Mountain Gorilla and other endangered animals.
***VERY IMPORTANT***---IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT (PLANNED OR UNEXPECTED) PLEASE TRY TO LOOK UP THE EUREKA MATH LESSON ON-LINE. IT WILL BENEFIT HIM/HER TO LOOK AT THE LESSON ON GOOGLE. THAT WAY WHEN THEY RETURN THEY DIDN'T MISS A BEAT IN MATH CLASS. I REALLY APPRECIATE THE FAMILIES THAT ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE ON-LINE RESOURCE. SIMPLY SEARCH GOOGLE "Eureka Math Grade 4 Module (whatever) Lesson (whatever). A gentleman named Duane Haverbeck will actually teach and model the lesson for you/your child.
For those parents that want to sign up for "Remind" (a group text alert from me) please text
I will send group texts for big reminders such as field trips, 1/2 days, school spirit days, etc.
All other info such as assignments, upcoming tests, curricular activities, etc. will be posted on this webpage and will not be "group texted" out.

CURRICULUM UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF: 3/18--3/22
In Quarter 3 we are covering our unit titled "Perseverance". We will be reading the novel, "Bud, Not Buddy" and reading many articles/texts of people that persevered through various adversities and challenges...Never Give Up! We will continue enhancing skills we've been using/learning all year long: context clues, summarizing, character traits, inferencing, 1st person vs 3rd person text, tall tales and main idea/detail.
Quarter 3 will focus on Personal Narrative. Students will take a "small moment" and expand on that in great detail in their writing showing feelings and emotions. It's not the trip to Disney...it's that one ride in Disney. It's not the whole baseball tournament...it's that one plate appearance. Students will use detail, emotion and the senses in their Personal Narratives. We'll also be doing another research simulation writing project. Students will use 2-3 articles plus a video and create an essay using and quoting all 2-3 articles and the video. If time I'd like to do a debate writing on Zoos...Are they good? Are they bad?
